Artificial intelligence (AI) is generally considered to be a key technology of the future and as such has considerable economic potential. Several studies are already focussing this potential. However, none of these studies has explicitly focused the producing sector in Germany so far, although this represents one of the important pillars of the German economy. The aim of this study is therefore to capture the potential of AI in the manufacturing sector in Germany. To this end, the assessments of AI providers, potential AI users (large companies and SMEs of the manufacturing sector) and researchers in the field of AI are compared. In contrast to previous studies, a distinction is made between the basic AI technologies, the AI applications and the value creation stages of the manufacturing industry.

This study was conducted on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) within the Scope of Scientific Assistance on the “PAiCE” Technology Programme.
