Future Radar Digital Municipality

Together with the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB), the Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit) has regularly published the "Future Radar Digital Municipality" since 2018. The survey aims to provide answers on the current status of digitalization in municipalities across Germany, identify acute needs for action and highlight possible starting points for the digital transformation process in municipalities. In addition to the questions about the fundamentals of digitalization at municipal level, the Future Radar also looks at the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and automated systems in everyday municipal life as well as the topic of cyber security. An online questionnaire is used as the survey method. All German cities and municipalities are invited to take part.

The aim of the future radar is to assess the changes compared to previous years and thus better identify the need for action. In addition, the results of the survey serve to underline the important role of municipalities in the digitalization of administration, the protection of the digital society and the willingness to innovate in the design of digital services for citizens and to give greater visibility to the necessary requirements. The results are incorporated into strategies and political demands vis-à-vis the federal and state governments.
