Final Report 2026

Julian Stubbe, Sonja Kind, Anastasiia Volianska, Bettina Schmietow

This report evaluates the impacts of the Active and Assisted Living (AAL) Programme based on projects funded between 2018 and 2021. Drawing on survey data and qualitative case studies, it analyses contributions to innovation, quality of life and care systems in the context of Europe’s demographic change. The results show that AAL has strengthened Europe’s innovation capacity by accelerating product development, supporting market entry and fostering cross-border collaboration. At the same time, user-centred solutions have improved autonomy, wellbeing and social participation of older adults. In addition, AAL has generated important ecosystem effects by building networks and enabling knowledge exchange. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding financing, regulatory complexity and scaling. The report concludes that future programmes should complement early-stage funding with stronger support for commercialisation and implementation.
