Crisis Science Project (CRISP)
In the event of an upcoming crisis, quick responses are essential. To develop responsive strategies and emergency measures, both policymakers and scientists need to be well connected, enabling them to exchange knowledge and relevant information in a timely manner.
In autumn and winter 2021/2022 the Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit) managed the Crisis Science Project on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project, CRISP for short, aimed to strengthen dialog and cooperation at the interfaces between science and public administration. To this end, an interdisciplinary and intersectoral development team from administration, science, innovation agencies and intermediaries developed mechanisms and structures for rapid and responsive, science-based policy advice. With the help of the design thinking method and interviews with experts, relevant needs in the advisory process were learned, examined and finally constructed. Formats and prototypes were developed and tested and international networking was also promoted.
Outcomes
The Crisis Science Project presented its development work at the network meeting of the BMBF on the future of the dialogue between science and politics in January 2022. Under the motto “learning from others towards better cooperation”, the participants then exchanged ideas with discussion partners from other European countries - including the Science Advice Initiative of Finland, the UK Government Office for Science, GovLabAustria und the European Comission’s Joint Research Centre.
