Artificial Intelligence Innovation Competition

As part of the AI Innovation Competition, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) aims to promote outstanding approaches to new forms of AI-based platform economies in important sectors of the German economy. As accompanying research, we support the funded projects in the successful and efficient implementation of the intended project goals, leverage synergy effects, and prepare the results obtained for further desired target groups of the program in terms of sustainable utilization. In doing so, we also identify and work on cross-cutting issues relating to ethical and legal issues in the data economy, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) methods, and the development of digital data products and AI-based business models. We also ensure efficient program-related networking with key players from business, science and politics. The Institute for Innovation + Technology (iit) in VDI/VDE-IT is the consortium leader of the accompanying research. The national AI strategy is intended to help secure Germany's future as an industrial location and open up new markets for German companies. An important contribution to rapid implementation is the "Artificial Intelligence" innovation competition, with which the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is promoting the development of AI-based platform concepts. More than 130 consortia from science and industry entered their concept ideas in the 2019 competition, from which 16 funded projects were selected for a three-year implementation phase. As lighthouses, they are intended to provide important impetus for the use of AI in key sectors of the German economy.
